These classes are designed to give you the skills and knowledge for lifesaving and water safety. All these American Red Cross classes are held at Kentwood Aquatics Center. Come join our lifesaving community and prepare yourself today! If you can get 4 participants, we'll run an unscheduled class for LG, LGI, WSI, CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer, or Review class. We only run classes with 4 or more participants.

All registrations must be submitted a minimum of 2 week prior to the start date of the class, failure to do so will result in an additional $15.00 late charge. After your register, please turn in your payment to the aquatics center office or send it to:

We can only accept cash, cashiers checks, money orders, or *personal checks. Please make out all payments to "KPS Community Safety." Personal checks must be received a minimum of week prior to the start date of the class. You may be subject to a rescheduling of your class if your payment is late.

Lifeguard Training

Lifeguard Training


(includes pocket mask, materials, and certification cards)

If you're 15 or older and looking for a great summer job or a challenging career, American Red Cross Lifeguarding is the best place to start! This course helps you develop skills and experience valued by colleges and future employers. You'll develop these skills and learn how to deal effectively with people, fostering a "take charge" attitude. You'll also get a participant's manual and tips for securing a lifeguarding job.

The pre-class qualifications are a 300 yard non-stop swim, tread in the deep water, and retrieve a ten-pound brick from the bottom of the deep water and return it to the side within a required time.

This Red Cross class trains instructor candidates to be proactive when it comes to water safety. Participants will learn how to teach Basic Water Rescue and Personal Water Safety courses, six levels of Learn-to-Swim, three levels of Preschool Aquatics and two levels of Parent and Child Aquatics. You DO NOT have to be a lifeguard to take this class, but you must be proficient to level 4 in all strokes (front crawl, back crawl, breaststroke, butterfly, side stroke, and elementary back) to take this class.

Teaches instructor candidates to teach basic-level Lifeguarding, Waterfront Lifeguarding, Waterpark Lifeguarding, and Shallow Water Attendant (all including first aid), Lifeguard management, CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer, Administering Emergency Oxygen, Blood borne Pathogens Training: Preventing Disease Transmission and Basic Water Rescue Courses. – Certified LGIs may only teach those classes in which they themselves are certified. You will need to do an on-line portion before you start class.

Review & Recert

  (for CPR | for full recert)

All of our full Lifeguard classes (see above) will allow a LG Review/Recert on last 8-10 hours, contact Joey for more information.

An American Red Cross recertification is a review class. Participants come in review and practice the skills and finish by taking the Written Exam(s) (if and only if they get 80% or better on exam) If you need additional time to finish, you can be given up to 3 hours to be arranged with instructor.
