East Kentwood girls soccer team defeats host Hudsonville 2-1 on Wednesday.

Brittany Tanner and Alexis Fricke each scored a goal.

The match was tied 1-1 at halftime.

“The second half was a battle played between the 18s as both teams generated scoring chances,” Hudsonville coach Mark Mulder said.

EK Baseball splits double-header with Grandville

Grandville and East Kentwood baseball teams each won once in their doubleheader on Monday after Grandville claimed Game 1 9-3 and East Kentwood fought back in Game 2 for a 13-7 win.

Brian Capiello lead the Grandville bats with two singles and a home run, and Mitch Dykestra earned the win on the mound, throwing five strikeouts and keeping the East Kentwood batters off balance.

Kyle Frieburg helped lead East Kentwood at the plate with two singles, two doubles, and scoring three runs, while Alex Bergers earned the win after throwing six strikeouts.

'I think it's the type of thing where you are seeing good pitches and you are comfortable at the plate, you dig in and are able to drive the baseball," East Kentwood coach Tim McKinnon said. "And that's what we did."

EK Girls Soccer wins O-K Title for 7th consecutive year!

IT'S A GREAT DAY TO BE A FALCON! Congratulations, EK Girls Soccer!

Five different players scored for East Kentwood as the Falcons clinched the OK Red girls soccer title for the seventh straight season with a 5-0 win over visiting Holland West Ottawa on Monday.

Kami Baker, Brittany Tanner, Jewell Edwards, Izzy Leon and Abbey Tyson all scored a goal for East Kentwood, and Chani Warfield chipped in two assists.

Kasey Stehouwer made four saves to earn the shutout for East Kentwood.

"The OK Red is one of the best leagues in the state, and winning it is one of our goals every year," East Kentwood coach Jon Conlon said. "Every game is very difficult in this league, and no one is prepared to give you anything.

"It's a marathon every season, but our team is a resilient group; they work hard and they know how to handle adversity."

East Kentwood (11-2-3, 8-0-1 OK Red), ranked eighth in Division 1 in the most recent coaches' poll, will finish the regular season with a game against Hudsonville on Wednesday, and will open district play against conference rival Rockford on May 28th.

"We're excited to get the opportunity to extend our season against Rockford," Conlon said. "It's a great rivalry, and it's going to be an all-out battle."

EK Boys Golf edges Holland West Ottawa on tiebreaker!

Brian Wilson shot a 46 for the East Kentwood boys golf team, which edged Holland West Ottawa's Kyle Harper (49) to give the Falcons the tiebreaker win.

Both teams shot a 170 and needed to use the Wilson's and Harper's scores to determine a winner.

Evan Printz took medalist honors for West Ottawa with a 39 and Adam Goudelock led EK with a 40.

Falcon Softball sweeps Grand Haven 9-2 and 12-2

Lauren Parker had six hits with two doubles for the East Kentwood softball team, which swept a doubleheader against visiting Grand Haven on Tuesday and improved its winning streak to four games.

East Kentwood won the first game 9-2 and the second game 12-2.

East Kentwood's Kayla Kurzyniec pitched five innings with seven strikeouts and two walks.

Abigail Highway hit a walk-off double in the bottom of the seventh inning for the East Kentwood softball team as it beat visiting Wyoming 5-4 on Monday.

Highway, a freshman, also was the winning pitcher as she had two strikeouts and one walk in seven innings pitched.

"We kept it going and worked really well as a team today," EK coach Sheri Hoving said. "They stayed focused form the first to last pitch. You could tell we really wanted it."

Wyoming's Jamie Jenkinson had two hits with a double and Audra Kurkjian had two hits with a stolen base.

Jade Garcia had a hit with two stolen bases and Taylor Galster had two hits with a double and an RBI for East Kentwood, which took a 3-0 lead after one inning.

Wyoming tied the game at 3-3 with a three-run third inning.

Hoving said Highway played her best game of the year.

"She came ready to play and had a great day," said Hoving. "She didn't have a lot of strikeouts, but she had a great defense behind her, which gave her some confidence."

Falcon Girls Tennis def. Grand Haven 5 - 3

GO RED! GO BLACK! Falcon Girls Tennis for the WIN!

The East Kentwood girls tennis team won all four singles flights as well as No. 1 doubles to beat host Grand Haven 5-3 on Monday.

East Kentwood dropped a total of 11 games in singles play, taking each flight in two sets.

No. 1 singles player Sydney Hodge won 6-0, 6-2 over Erin Staal of Grand Haven.

“The singles played really hard today,” East Kentwood coach Duy Tran said. “They came in and they know that the weight is on them. We just played last Saturday at the Holland Invite, and our top 3 singles already played (Grand Haven) at the invitational and they won. They knew they were going to be under pressure today.”

At No. 1 doubles, Katie Giarmo and Kim Hodgson defeated Grand Haven’s Maggie Ginocchio and Olivia Reed 6-3, 6-2 to clinch the match for East Kentwood.

“Everybody played really hard,” Tran said. “We expected it to be a tough match because Grand Haven is a very good team. It was a good practice for us today, and it will help us get ready for the conference tournament on Saturday at Grand Haven.”

EK Girls and Boys Track win Ken Bell Invitational!

IT'S A GREAT DAY TO BE A FALCON!

Great job Falcon Boys Track!

Kevin Smith won the 100-meter dash (11.16 seconds) and the 200 (22.52) for the East Kentwood boys track team, which scored 179 points to win the Ken Bell Invitational for the fifth consecutive year hosted by Traverse City Central on Friday.

Smith also was part of the winning 800 relay (1:30.82) team with Houston Glass, Kewon Getter and Devin McKinney.

Justin Harris, Getter, Onrekus Carter and McKinney won the 400 relay (42.87), a time which Emeott said is "probably one of the better times in the state of Michigan."

Ramadhan Mohamed won the 800 (2:03.03) for East Kentwood and Chase Barnett won the 1,600 (4:15.63) for Mason County Central.

Glass also won the long jump (21-feet-2.75).

"We think our team is peaking at the right time," Emeott said. "We are very excited."

Freshman Sekayi Bracey won the 100-meter dash (12.29 seconds), the 200 (25.38) and the long jump (18-feet-4.5) for the East Kentwood girls track team, which scored 171 points to win the Ken Bell Invitational on Friday hosted by Traverse City Central.

Bracey also was part of the winning 800 relay (1:44.96) team with Cheyenne Longoria, Charity Bruce and Justice Craft.

The team of Longoria, Shanel Waters, Bruce and Craft also won the 400 relay (50.27).

East Kentwood shutout host Portage Central in the second half of its 3-2 win Friday.

“It was a great game and very combative,” Portage Central coach Pat Norman said. “We had them on their heels. East Kentwood coach John Conlon’s halftime speech must have been awe inspiring, because they came out and pounded us for 40 minutes.”

East Kentwood hosts Hudsonville at 7 p.m. Tuesday, while Portage Central visits Stevensville Lakeshore on Monday.

Kentwood Students like lamb!

Middle and high school students aren’t usually known for their healthy eating habits nor sophisticated pallets, but a recent project caused us to challenge this assumption. Believe it or not, middle and high school students in Kentwood, Kelloggsville and Grand Rapids Public Schools tried and liked Mediterranean-style kafta, sfeeha and calzones with cucumber sauce hand-made by school food service staff. Six out of 10 students surveyed from East Kentwood High School and Grand Rapids’ City High said they really enjoyed the meal and would likely select it again. A few students said this was their first time ever trying lamb meat and they were enthusiastic about trying something new.

This project was the brain child of Kentwood Food Service Director, Mo Shamali, and Grand Rapids Food Service Director, Paul Baumgartner. Baumgartner met a lamb producer at his cottage last summer and talked with Shamali about how lamb could be prepared for a school meal. Baumgartner has long been a supporter of Michigan agriculture and farm-to-school initiatives. Shamali is Jordanian-born and has experience in preparing and serving lamb dishes. Both food service directors also wanted this dish to help students learn about religious harmony as Christians, Muslims and Jews all eat lamb.

KENTWOOD, MI – Nothing like a beautiful day and competing against your bitter rivals to bring out the best in you.

That's what happened to East Kentwood senior shot putter Mariah Davis Tuesday afternoon on her home pit against the Rockford Rams.

Davis won the shot put with a personal best throw of 45 feet, one inch, which is the top throw in the state so far in Division 1.

That effort helped set the tone for the day, as the Falcons beat Rockford 70.5-66.5 in a battle of two of the best teams in West Michigan in a key OK Red Conference dual.

The boys meet was not as close, as East Kentwood beat the Rams 99-38.

Five EK musicians to perform at the MI Youth Arts Festival!

The instrumental music department of East Kentwood HS is pleased and very proud to announce that five student musicians have been selected to perform at the Michigan Youth Arts Festival held at WMU on Thursday, May 9th through Saturday, May 11th. This festival is unique in our nation in that all disciplines of the arts are represented in this festival.

As a result of their superior performances at both District and State Solo and Ensemble Festivals, Claire Ross, 11th grade horn, and Katey Armstrong, 11th grade violin, have been selected to perform in the MYAF Honors Orchestra. This concert will be held on Saturday, May 10th at WMU's Miller Auditorium.

As a result of their superior performances at the MSBOA State Jazz Festival. Aaron Krause, 12th grade drum set, Charlie Cooper, 11th grade vibraphone and Hy Doan, 12th grade piano, have been selected to perform in the MYAF Honors Jazz Ensemble. This is a huge honor---only 20 students in the entire state are selected and 3/5 of the jazz ensemble's rhythm section came from EK! Their concert will also be on Saturday afternoon in Miller Auditorium as well.

Finally, Claire Ross was a one of four soloists selected out of 13,000 entries in District Solo/Ensemble Festival, 9,000 State events, and 2,600 proficiency events. Her score of 99/100 nominated her to the concerto competition which was held at CMU in mid-April. Almost 100 students were invited to compete. She was one of 11 finalists to perform for a panel of university judges. At the end of the day four students were selected to perform their concerti at the Gala Concert on Friday, May 10th at Miller Auditorium. She will perform Franz Strauss Concerto for Horn Op 8. The members of the Grand Rapids Youth Symphony will provide the accompaniment.

Brittany Tanner led East Kentwood with a goal and an assist as the Falcons bested Grandville 3-1 in a girls soccer match Monday.

Alison Anderson and Isabelle Leon added goals for East Kentwood, which jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first half and never looked back.

Elise Royer scored a goal for Grandville, assisted by Sydney Biltchok.

East Kentwood is now 5-1-1 on the season, and remains undefeated in the OK Red, with a 3-0 record.

Falcon Girls Tennis ties GR Christian in GRC Invitational

The three-team Grand Rapids Christian Invitational girls tennis tournament turned into a battle in the rare spring sunshine between the host and East Kentwood, and while the Eagles own both No. 1 match-ups, the Falcons' depth allowed them to tie the match 4-4.

Both Christian and East Kentwood defeated Hudsonville Unity Christian 8-0 in other matches.

We have a Kentwood Clothing Closet that provides free clothes to families in the district. The closet is maintained by our National Honor Society and Special Education students. While they love organizing clothes, they would much rather be filling orders for families in need.
